Event details

This group bears the enigmatic name of the hero of Virginia Woolf's eponymous and mysterious novel. Like Orlando who swears to remain immortal and who will cross many eras, these four musicians experiment together with the many aspects of their reality and their evolution through time. A variety of styles and tones, subtle rhythms, a music where joy and melancholy meet at every moment. Played with ease, this music is an invitation to travel in a poetic universe, and opens the door to great spaces. The drumming is airy, and the double bass, central, breathes like the old tree under which Orlando throws himself. The sound and the silences are skillfully shared with the melodies of the bass clarinet, and the ever-changing chords of the virtuoso piano: the musical adventure is at the center of this quartet. To encourage the listening and the interaction between the musicians, they chose to record the whole album in one open space (no booths or headphones). They chose the big stage of the Espace Senghor in Brussels, the same venue where they will present the album for its official release. The level of concentration is palpable, and the musicians go by instinct and confidence. Orlando is the winner of the Octave de la Musique 2021 (Best Belgian Jazz) "This impulse that leads the group, and the listener, towards a music of discovery". J-C Vantroyen, Le Soir "Toine Thys imbues his singularity with an undeniable temperament on an album that is masterful and captivating from start to finish" Jacques Prouvost, Larsen 2020 "Here's a chance to hear what goes on in European jazz. And this is very tasty in a meditative, considerate way by this excellent band of Thys " Graham Reid, in Elsewhere, New Zealand

Ce qui séduit d’emblée dans cet opus au titre inspiré par celui du roman éponyme de Virginia Woolf, c’est la douce fluidité des échanges, souligné par la complicité et la complémentarité de ces quatre improvisateurs
