Trésors de philatélie par Foni Tissen - Présentation d'un livre-catalogue
The book “Treasures of philately by Foni Tissen” invites the reader to rediscover Foni TISSEN (1909-1975) both painter and illustrator from Luxembourg. Its series of “Caritas” stamps subtitled ‘Legends’ and ‘Châteaux’, issued between 1965 and 1970 by the Administration des Postes et Télécommunication du Luxembourg, are influenced by folk tradition and the history of medieval architecture in the Grand -Duchy.
Foni Tissen, through his philatelic work and through a visual game between fiction and reality, contributes to spreading the cultural and historical heritage of Luxembourg.
Polish painter Paula Szpinda (b. 1989), studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, then obtained a master’s degree in “Learning and communication in multilingual and multicultural contexts” at the University of Luxemburg. She defended a thesis dealing with “the visual communication of Luxembourg philately”. In this research work, Paula Szpinda analyzed these postage stamps as artistic objects as well as in their functions as vectors of representation and communication for the Luxembourg State. Alongside the artistic aspect of her subject, she was also interested in the techniques used by the Post Office in a process of raising public awareness of the themes of cultural and historical heritage.
